Imagine standing on ground that has always felt certain beneath your feet. The roads are familiar. You’ve built shelters for your family. Life is steady and secure. Then, in a matter of moments, the earth shifts. The foundation cracks. What once felt immovable suddenly reminds us how fragile this world can be.

A Biblical Precedent

Throughout Scripture, earthquakes are referenced nearly twenty times, each one carrying a powerful message. Some are literal events that shook mountains and crumbled cities. Others are vivid illustrations of God’s unmatched power. The Prophets Amos and Zechariah spoke of the great earthquake during the days of King Uzziah, using it as a reminder that the God we serve, and who is coming to this earth, is mighty and sovereign.

In Ezekiel, Isaiah, Matthew, and Revelation, earthquakes often accompany moments when God reveals His presence, His judgment, or His coming kingdom.

Earthquake Hits Colombia

The apostle Paul writes: For we now know that all the creatures groan together and travail in pain together until now (Romans 8:22).

A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, August 10, 2026, at 7:34 a.m. local time. The deep quake (about 64–68 miles underground) caused widespread severe damage, leaving at least 181 people dead, over 2,500 injured, and a state of emergency declared.

We are awed at God’s grace as none of our workers were injured. One team member was at the Bogotá airport when the earthquake struck, and she said it was the most terrifying experience of her life. As believers, our hearts ache alongside the loss of many families, and we lift prayers on their behalf.

SOM Colombia workers are committed to doing whatever they can to bring hope and relief. It is times like this that people become most open to the Lord and His Word.

God’s Steadfast Foundation

Just as tectonic plates can suddenly shift and alter landscapes, God often uses life’s uncertainties to remind us where true security is found. Earthly foundations may crumble, yet Jesus remains the same yesterday, today, and forever. May God gently reveal to those affected by this earthquake to put their trust not in the things of this world, but in Him alone.

Pray with SOM Colombia workers to persevere in the work of mercy and discipleship. Remember the families who have been displaced or injured, as well as for those who have lost loved ones. Ask God to comfort them in their grief and pray that His people would be His hands and feet in their communities. Most importantly, pray that He would draw hearts to the Lord Jesus Christ.
