Rescue the Captors by Russell Stendal

Rescue the Captors is the exciting story of Russell Stendal who was kidnapped for ransom deep in the jungle of Columbia. American Bush pilot Russell Stendal’s TERROR began on October 14, 1983. On routine business, Russell landed his plane in a remote Colombian village. Gunfire exploded throughout the town. Within minutes Russell’s 142 day ordeal had begun. The guerrilla fighters explained that this was a kidnapping for ransom. His captors demanded twelve million pesos and he would be held until payment was made. Russell, with no help coming or means to raise the ransom, turned to the Lord and utterly surrendered. Over time, his ordeal literally turned into Jesus’ ransom paying for the kidnappers.

With little else to occupy his time, Russell began to write the story of his life.  While held at gunpoint deep in the jungle, he kept a record of his five month experience in the guerrilla camp. Russell poured his heart out to the Lord. Russel commented, “I could have written about my experiences that might have painted me as a big hero with a white hat all the time, but it would have defeated my purpose…. I have presented it as it happened.” His captors demanded to read the anti-guerrilla comments they thought he was writing. Instead they found his honest human humbling before the Lord and his connection with the hearts of the men and women who held him. Eventually, his “book” became a bridge to the men and women who held him. His journal, Rescue the Captors, now serves as the basis for his incredible true story about how God’s love penetrated both a physical and ideological jungle.

Rescue the Captors is an amazing story of God’s love in the most remote places of the world.
