Tortured for Christ

Richard Wurmbrand’s crime, like that of thousands of others, was his fervent belief in Jesus Christ. Proven by his public witness concerning his faith. So, he spent fourteen years in prison in Communist Romania. Solitary confinement, physical and mental torture, extreme hunger and cold – these were the experiences of Pastor Richard Wurmbrand. When he was ransomed out of the country of Romania for $10,000 in 1965, secret police warned him never to speak against the Communists. But Pastor Wurmbrand could not remain silent.  Within days of his arrival in the West, he wrote what many later called “the book that shocked the world”: Tortured for Christ.

In this important work, Pastor Wurmbrand documented how he and other Romanian believers met secretly for worship. He and his fellowship took great risks to evangelize the occupying Russian soldiers.  Despite being tortured and imprisoned for his obedient witness, he shared a message of Christ’s love and forgiveness to his persecutors.  “I love the Communists with all of my heart,” he wrote.  “Communists can kill Christians but they cannot kill their love toward even those who killed them.”

The message of Tortured for Christ, as it tells the agonizing but triumphant story of the persecuted church behind the Iron Curtain, is as urgent today was it was fifty years ago. The violent world in which we live has fostered the growth of hostility to the gospel of Jesus Christ. A timeless and bestselling account of courage, tenacious faith, and unbelievable endurance.  Most astounding is Pastor Richard Wurmbrand’s life of forgiveness. Read the book that continues to inspire Christians around the world today.
