Delicious Dal Recipe From India
Dal (Mashed)
Ingredients:
1/2 C. Lentils
Aromatics (Vegetables/Herbs)
1 Medium Onion (Chopped)
1 or 2 Green Chilies
1/2 tsp. Salt
1/2 tsp. Red Chili Powder
Pinch of Turmeric Powder
3 Tomatoes (Chopped)
2 C. Water
Dal (Fry)
Ingredients:
2 – 3 TBSP. Oil
3 – 4 Pods of Garlic (Crushed)
2 – 3 Dried Red Chilies
1/2 – 3/4 tsp. Cumin Seeds
10 – 12 *Curry Leaves
(Fresh, if easily available)
1 C. Water
2 TBSP. Coriander Leaves
(Freshly Chopped, if available)
Add lentils to large pot (or pressure cooker) with 2 cups of water. Cook until lentils are soft and fully cooked.
Sauté the aromatics and spices in a skillet over medium high heat for 6 to 8 minutes.
Add the aromatics and tomatoes to the lentils. Stir to combine. Do not be gentle, mash lentils and combine the mixture.
Continue on to make the Dal (Fry)
Heat oil in large pan. Add seasonings, garlic, red chilies, black mustard seeds, and cumin seeds. Sauté until they change color and crackle, about one minute. (*Add curry leaves, if available, they add a very nice flavor to the Dal.) Sauté for one minute longer.
Add this fried mixture to the mashed Dal and blend mixtures together.
Slowly add approximately 1 cup of water to create a smooth, even consistency. Stir while simmering the Dal for 2 to 3 minutes on low temperature.
