Ministering in Remote Villages in Mexico
Below is a story of how tragedy strikes in Mexico and how the Lord made good out of it and empowered them to continue ministering in remote villages in Mexico.
Tragedy Strikes in Mexico
Seven years ago, the SOM-Mexico Director and his wife were preparing for a trip to minister in a very difficult and remote area of Mexico, known for drugs, violence and prostitution, when they had an accident. The director was preparing the motorized paraglider and his wife was standing in the front of the aircraft helping. Suddenly, tragedy strikes in Mexico and the aircraft tipped and his wife naturally put her hand up to stop the tipping and the propeller hit her left hand and cut off her three smallest fingers. The SOM-Mexico director immediately tore off his shirt and wrapped it around her hand. The hospital was far off and on the way, his wife passed out. They got her to the hospital and the medical staff moved quickly to stabilize her.
Tears filled all of our eyes, as the couple began to retell their story. The director’s heart was broken as he sat beside his wife recuperating in the hospital. He told his wife they were calling off the trip. However, she responded, “The enemy must really not want us to go to that village.” She said, “You and the others must still go and minister to the people there.” God touched many hearts and several prostitutes and drug dealers surrendered their lives to the Lord that weekend of ministering in the remote villages in Mexico.
The director’s wife shared it wasn’t easy to deal with the loss of her fingers and she grieved bitterly with tears flowing as they unwrapped her bandages for the first time. She surrendered her hurt and sorrow to the Lord.
Beauty for Ashes
The scars are beauty marks for us to see and to hear the story of how God used a tragedy for good. The SOM-Mexico director’s wife showed beautiful faith to encourage her husband to continue ministering in a remote and dangerous villages of Mexico, despite her circumstances, touches all of our hearts deeply and in the midst of her pain, she experienced the Lord’s peace in her heart as Hebrews 13 says, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you. So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.’”
(Hebrews 13:5b-6)
